Cold email reply rate is the percentage of sent (or delivered) emails that receive a direct reply from the recipient. It is calculated as: (replies received ÷ emails sent) × 100. Reply rate is the most important metric in cold email because it measures a genuine human action — the recipient chose to respond — and cannot be inflated by email client pre-loading (unlike open rates).
What constitutes a "reply"
All replies count toward reply rate, including negative responses ("not interested"), out-of-office autoresponders, and referrals to another contact. For campaign analysis, it's important to track positive reply rate separately (interested or neutral responses only) in addition to total reply rate.
